Proposal No: 28

The end of the real

Slavoj Zizek puts forward that the key feature of the 20th century was the ‘passion for the real’. In contrast to the 19th century of utopian and scientific projects and ideals, the 20th century aimed at delivering the thing itself and realizing the longed for New Order. If this is the case what is the key feature of the 21st century so far?

It could be said it is the realisation of the failure of the utopian ideal and its deliverance and as a result an increasing retreat into a virtual and online world of blogging and social networking. These sites become a place for people to live a part of their lives away from the reality of the ‘real’. Or maybe becoming the ‘real’ itself.

James & Jones propose to develop a project which questions the ideal of the 21st century so far and how it has developed within its first 10 years. Artists will be invited to propose a 21st century ideal looking century so far and into the future. This would obviously be affected by the events of the last 10 years.

Proposed artists: Heath Bunting, Mark Mcagown, Minerva Cuevas, Goshka Macuga
